Blog Post #3: Dick’s Sporting Goods

Content Strategy


I think we can all agree to this that when it comes to shopping these days it is all done online.  The internet, or the World Wide Web, whatever you really want to call it helps people find a specific product that their looking for and what company’s offer that product.  Dick’s Sporting Good’s message, or in other words “mission”, “Is to be recognized by our customers as the #1 sports and fitness specialty onmi-channel retailer that serves and inspires athletes and outdoor enthusiasts to achieve their personal best through the relentless improvement of everything we do.”  Dick’s Sporting Goods offer many variety of products and brand names in their many store locations and on their website.  They don’t just offer their specific brand but they give their customers the options to buy different brands that meet their needs and wants.  They want to give their customers options and not stick to one specific product or brand name. 
Dick’s Sporting Goods does offer platform-to-platform.  The different platforms that Dick’s Sporting Goods offer are; Twitter, Facebook, their website, Pinterest, YouTube, Google Plus, and their mobile app.  They just announced recently that they have Snapchat and a Periscope accounts so that their followers can get a deeper inside look into their company.  On their Twitter and Facebook account they announce what they are going to do on Periscope, they talk about what they sponsor, certain charity events that they are a part of or what they are bringing awareness to, and they also promote products that they are releasing or what current products that they have.  Dick’s Sporting Goods is very “Social Media” company.  They are constantly saying or doing something on social media to help spread the word about their company and the products that they offer. 
Dick’s Sporting Goods believes in four specific things;
1.       Driven – We play to win
2.       Committed – We believe in relentless improvement
3.       Skilled – We are focused, and precise
4.       Passionate – We live for our sport, our team, and our community
“Believed that sports play a vital role in teaching our children fundamental values like a strong work ethic, teamwork and good sportsmanship”(dickssportinggooods.jobs).  Dick’s Sporting Goods also excels at price, selection of products/brands, and how easy they are.  They want to be that store that anyone can go to.  Everything they offer in their store or online is a sport to them or a passion to their customers.  They like giving their customers not just one brand to select from but from many.  Also, using the social media platforms that they  use helps give them that exposure and helps them stay on top on all the latest trends and just exactly what people are looking for these days. 
They definitely use the content strategy and value propositioning for selling.  Their consumers are following the company on every platform that they use and constantly shop at their locations or online.  Plus, they offer discounts and even a credit card to where you can earn points for your advantage, which is awesome!!

Dick’s Sporting Goods


Dick’s Sporting Goods digital tools that they use to help promote their company are;

Dick’s Sporting Goods is, as of 2015, is ranked at number 393 in the Fortune 500 list and is listed at the same number in the Fortune 1000 list for the same year (hoovers.com).  Dick’s Sporting Goods has about 690 stores in about 45—plus states.  What makes this company unique and really successful is that they offer many different apparel brands besides their own.  They offer different variety of sports and activity wear that even includes shoes! Some of the brands that they carry are; NIKE, Adidas, Ativa, Walter Hagen, Top-Flite, and now they just allowed Carrie Underwood’s workout clothing line into their stores.  Dick’s Sporting Goods also has and operates over more than 75 Golf Galaxy stores in roughly 30 states.  They also have 10 Field & Stream and three True Runner stores.  In 2017, Dick’s Sporting Goods will no longer partner with EBay.  They are going in a different direction and taking control of their e-commerce.  They want to sell their primary platform site to its own platform by January of 2017 (zdnet.com).  By doing this, Dick’s Sporting Goods will improve their profit margins because it will pay less to EBay Enterprise in fees.  This is pretty cool because Dick’s Sporting Goods already succeeds in a lot of things but they want their technology and their e-commerce to improve as well. The graph below will give you a better understanding of what I am talking about.  All in all, big changes are coming for Dick’s Sporting Goods within this year and it will be for the better or it could be a decline in sales.  You never know until you take a risk that is worth taking.

Introduction "DICK's Sporting Goods"

Hello Everyone! 

First off, I would like to thank everyone who is reading my blog and following me! It's nice to see that I have followers out there who like what I have to say and what I have to share! Thank you!

The company that I have chosen to do thought out my time in this class is "Dicks Sporting Goods."  Dicks Sporting Goods is a company that was founded in 1948.  This company is an "Authentic full-line sporting goods retailer offering a broad assortment of brand name sporting goods equipment, apparel and footwear in a specialty store environment" with an outstanding $6.21 Billion dollars in annual revenue.  They are also a publicly traded company. 

Dick's Sporting Goods mission statement is simply this; "At DICK’S Sporting Goods, we ensure ultimate customer satisfaction by employing an exceptional team of associates, who truly “live” our brand. Our associates demonstrate a combination of drive, skill, commitment and passion for our business that is shared with the athletes and enthusiasts we serve. These experts draw on their personal experience and passion for sports to guide, inform and inspire every customer, helping to make DICK’S Sporting Goods the top destination for dedicated athletes in every activity, for every season."  

At first, originally, Dick’s Sporting Goods was about targeting people in different athletic sports. For example, they would carry equipment for golf, football, softball, basketball, soccer, and track.  Now they have broaden their target market by caring products that fit any outdoor even indoor activity.  First they were targeting people who were strictly athletic and over the recent years they have expanded their products to fit people who weren’t athletic.  They now carry workout clothes, stuff for people to go camping, hiking, or just being in the outdoors in general.  They also carry many types of athletic shoes to running shoes or just simply everyday wear tennis shoes. 

Dick’s Sporting Goods isn’t just for people who are athletic anymore.  It’s a store where any can come in find what they need.  They offer many different products for many different people and they are constantly adapting to what is happening in the world and making sure that their customers and their future customers are satisfied with what they have to offer.
